While in Vancouver Wa about a month or so ago a motor home pulled up next to us and two guys jumped out and one of them started working on shining with a couple of different 3M compounds.  I was at first irritated by his tool’s noise as I was working on my computer.  As he progressed I began to see a new motor home emerge as he worked his way along.  I went over to find out what I could.

This is the guys stuff.  I photographed their stuff and I took notes.

DSC04167  DSC04168

Tom’s comment reminded me that I am not showing what I actually used so here they are.  The 3M compounds are from NAPA Auto parts.  The tool is from Harbor Freight Tools.  The orbital polishing tools will not do the job this tool does.  With the amount of torque I get using this I imagine the other tools would be next to useless.

This afternoon I went to work on my old ‘93 Chevy Diesel pickup.  We call it Baby Blue.

I’ll let you see the results.  You can click on a picture and see it larger.  This is step one.  I buff with a terry cloth pad and an aggressive rubbing compound.  I am 3/4 done.  Next step is going over it again with the tool and a 3M foam pad using a swirl remover which is a finer finish rubbing compound and the final stage will be a good wax job.  I am already so amazed.

At Last, A Starry Night!

Comments off

We finally got a clear, starry night last night.  Man oh man was it good to see the stars again!  I rushed out the telescope and pointed up Venus off to the west.  That nice shiny round point of light, when focused was a crescent shape much like the moon.  If you think about it, why not phases like the moon.  It’s a planet and the light we see is the Sun’s reflected light just like the moon.  Cool.

This is my photo through the lens of Venus.  Not good.  But I’ll be working on the whole process.  The next photo is of the moon but it didn’t turn out either.  I was so tickled to get to look at things I didn’t spend too much time trying to photograph them.  Time for that later.

Playing with the telescope

Between rain showers I got out and played with the telescope. With the complete overcast there was no sky to watch but the mountains were beautiful.  I got my finder scope aligned using the mountains.

  DSC04118

Then I tried a  little photography.  I just put my camera on the eye piece and clicked.  Not too bad.  The photo is of those rocks and snow fields on the mountains.  Pretty close up huh.

I found the problem with my motor drive.  I blew out a mosfet.  See the holes in the chip at the top left.  Parts on order.

DSC04102

Looky looky!  I got a telescope.  A buddy of mine has lent it to me and I am loving it.  I now have it about rigged up and am learning about how to work it.  There may be a break in these Western Oregon/Washington clouds this weekend.  WooooHoooooo!

Saturday we left Yuma for San Diego.  I have been working on a contract for several weeks and need to go to the company office.  Being mobile, not a big deal – we just move.

DSC03594  DSC03596
We checked into the Mission Bay RV Park.  We got a site on the “Beach view” side.  The problem as you can see above on the left is that the beach is way out there across a parking lot full of big utility trailers.  Barely visible.  On Sunday we moved to the “Bay View” side.  Now it’s much closer to the water and the view is much better.  Now if only we could get rid of that chain link fence.  They call it security.

DSC03597  DSC03598
We do get some pretty nice sunsets from this site.  The bay is beautiful.

And just to show I am working, here is our vehicle at the office.  It’s been productive.  Now back to the water……

Touring Around Yuma.

Comments off

This week we had two opportunities to tour around the Yuma Area.  One day we went with Bill and Diane to Algadonnes Mexico but I didn’t take any photos.  We were there a very short time and a very short distance.  I don’t think we got further than 200’ from the border crossing.

DSC03563DSC03566
On the way back though we drove around through vegetable fields and date orchards

DSC03567DSC03582
We stopped in at this wayside shop and bought some dates and I had the best tasting date shake I’ve had.  Yum!  We drove all the way around the Mittry Lake and enjoyed a lot of great views.

DSC03585DSC03588
On Sunday we took our own vehicle and did the same drive only in reverse.  We saw military helicopters and we went down to Imperial Dam beach.  We’re going to come back here and camp one of these days.

It was a great week.

UPGRADING the Solar System!

Comments off

09 12 02_0537  DSC03573  DSC03574
The Solar system on our rig consisted of two 130 watt panels, a 25 amp charge controller putting charge from the sun into four 6 volt deep cycle golf cart type batteries.  Then it feeds our 12vdc systems and a 2KW inverter.  The inverter takes the 12vdc from the batteries and makes household 110 vac that runs appliances like microwave, toaster, coffee maker and TV sets plus a lot of other things in our case.

Up to this point we have been pretty much independent of “the grid” electric wise but when we were not plugged in we had to be pretty conservative.  We were deficient in two aspects.  One was not enough panel power to get a great charge into the batteries.  If it was cloudy or I didn’t tilt the panels directly into the sun we just didn’t get quite enough charge.  The other area is not quite enough batteries to support our loads.

DSC03578  DSC03581
This weekend I purchased our third panel and got it mounted on the roof.  It’s the bigger one in the middle of these photos.  The two on the outside are 130 watts each.  The middle is 135 watts.  The boost in power is amazing.  That’s over 30% more so it’s significant.

Before I would charge around 12 to 14 amps in non tilted mode, now I am making 20 amps in non tilted mode.  Tilting them directly at the sun gives an additional 30%.  I’m gonna need a bigger controller.  This one is only 25 amps capable.  Once I get that, I’m gonna need more batteries and then and then…  Geeze does it never end?  Smile

DSC03579
This is my spiffy 4 way tilt mount.  There is an L bracket screwed into the roof and amply water proofed.  This is bolted to a hinge and the hinge is screwed into the panel mounting piece.  Nifty way to be able to tilt the panel in each of 4 directions.  I’ll show more if you are interested.

A New Outlook!

This winter we got hit with a big rock.  Right in the drivers side windshield, directly in front of the driver’s vision.

DSC03562  DSC03571

We were quite a while getting it claimed on the insurance and getting it replaced but this week in Yuma we did get it done.  When we drove out on our way to San Diego I really marveled at the clear view.

A lot more interesting than just our getting a new windshield was the couple who did the work.  We saw their business card on the bulletin board of the RV park and called them.  They showed up, measured and got the insurance company satisfied and a few days later came back and put the thingy in.  They were from Michigan.  The windshield business is really slow there in the dead of winter so they come to Yuma for a couple of months.  They drive down in their van with it’s tools.  They rent a Casita (small apartment), rent a booth at the local market place and put out business cards.  Neat idea.  Warm and making money.   Wonder if I could do something like that??

Yuma Model Airplanes Float Flying

Comments off

Tuesday is Float Fly Day says Bill.  Come on out and see the fun.  OK, I took off on Tuesday morning to see what was going on.

DSC03500  DSC03502
Mittry Lake is just  North of Yuma.  It’s Bureau of Reclamation Land managed by Arizona Wildlife whatever.  There are camping areas around the lake and this day use area.  This area has a big picnic shade with tables and this neat dock.

Quite a few guys showed up to fly.  Yep, everyone of those vehicles is a flier or two.

DSC03509   DSC03504
Bill brought his trailer while some guys have pickups and vans full of planes.

DSC03510  DSC03551
Some guys get pretty casual about it.  while some are right up on the edge about it all.

DSC03553  DSC03557
I have an Uproar!  I didn’t know it would fly floats.  Gotta try that next summer

DSC03528  DSC03531
Bill brought out and flew his 1/4 scale cub.  What a graceful and beautiful plane.

Of course not everyone did as well so the rowboat comes out every Tuesday.  I really enjoyed watching these guys.  I’d bet it would be twice as nice to fly as to watch!

Saturday Bill Beck and I went to the airshow at the model field.  We were there with about 1500 residents of the area.  The show was great.  There was continuous action and some darn good flying.

DSC03464
This was a small segment of the flight line.  Notice the 49% scale clipped wing cub and the 50% Christian Eagle.  They are owned and flown as a family thing.  The dad builds them and the son flies them.

Christian Eagle tail stand

This video is just a glimpse at the flight routine they did with this monster.  Wow.

DSC03470
This is the Christian Eagle on the ground.  Notice that it’s taller than waist high on those guys!  cool.

DSC03465
This helicopter never flew but look at that camera. Would that be fun?

DSC03468
I know this is hard to see but these little four prop things called “Quads” are really neat little electric flying machines.  There are 4 motors with props pointed straight up.  The motors work in pairs to control flight angle and direction and etc.  I can’t figure it out but I saw it.  Not sure…

Cub does Knife edge

When the Big cub  goes by you gotta realize that the engine in there is bigger than most snow mobile engines.  Power to spare.

Tail Standing Hover.

Another 39% model doing it’s show thing.  Full scale planes haven’t quite gotten to this power to weight ratio plus it’s easier if the pilot is standing on the ground, not having his life on the line inside the plane.

I took more video and more photos.  some day I’ll process them all.  It was a great day.  Don’t you love all this sunshine and warm if February.
